EFFECT OF STRIKE ON NIGERIAN STUDENTS. Students across various institutions of higher learning in Nigeria are constantly faced with industrial action, either by the Academic or Non-Academic Staff Union of various institutions. Most of these strike actions are caused by disagreement between the government and the unions of various institutions, arising from non-implementation or partial implementation of former agreements reached.
The disagreement or lack of understanding between government and academic community often result in deadlock that usually disrupts academic calendar.
As the saying goes, when two elephants fights, it is the grass that suffers it. The grass, in this case is the students who bear the brunt of the disagreement.
Incessant strikes dwindle the academic performances of students. As learning is suspended for a long period, the students reading abilities fall. Even the knowledge acquired during the learning period  is even forgotten by some students. This mostly turns some students into certificate seekers than knowledge seekers.
Also, most protracted strikes distort the school calendar. The after-effect is prolonged school year that exceeds stipulated periods. Most academic activities for the school year are distorted. This is one major cause of producing unqualified graduates who are deficient in their fields of study. In the same vein, students who are supposed to do a four year course end up spending six years in the school for a simple programme.
Such strike periods also have the tendency of leading undergraduates into some social vices like prostitution, oil bunkering etc. “An idle man” they say, “is the devils workshop.”
There is therefore, the need for a re-evaluation of the education sector. Factors that often lead to strike in our institutions should be addressed. There is no doubt that the infrastructures in most of our schools are as old as the years of the schools. This is unacceptable.
A conducive learning atmostphere is a sine-qua-non for quality education. In addition, education should be properly and adequately funded to encourage effective research and to avoid brain drain. Proper funding and equipment of Nigerian universities will go a long way to stop further strike action.
Meanwhile, government should always try to honour whatever agreement reached with the academic communities. Most protracted strikes can be averted if necessary steps are taken to build a good relationship between both parties. It is worth emphasizing that any government with a poor education system is heading towards a black future.
At the same time, the various union in our institutions of higher learning should device other means other than strike to resolve aggrieved issues. Strike action be the last resort. This is because of the negative effect frequent strikes have on students and the entire academic community.
It is sad that no government since the First Republic up till the present dispensation has averted strike action in our institutions of higher learning. The military government was the worst victim. If we are magnanimous to excuse the militancy government of its insensitivity to the students, given its mode of governance through fiat, there is no reasonable justification for the democratically elected government to toe the same path of academic destruction.
Any government that does not encourage education of its youth is directly compromising the future of the nation.such government is not worth living .

A 67-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of more than 90 rapes in Moscow, Russia.

The man admitted that he raped and robbed almost 100 women for more than 20 years

Valery Makarenkov admitted that since 1987 to 2014 he raped and robbed no fewer than 90 women. For more than 20 years the police was trying to track the unstoppable rapist down and isolate from society.

Pretending to be an ordinary cyclist the man attacked his victims early in the morning or late at night in courtyards and parks. The man strangled them till they stopped breathing, raped, took away their valuables and escaped afterwards on his bike.

Last attempted rape was committed in May when Makarenkov attempted and failed to rape a 29-year-old woman. His victim was able to fight him off, she immediately alerted police and was able to identify the malefactor after he was caught.

The suspect was detained during his bicycle trip in May, 2014

The suspect was detained during his bicycle trip. On the same bike he pursued his victims in the dark. Later it was gathered that all the crimes took place around his birthday, although the rapist acted spontaneously and had no preference in the age or the social status of the women.

The exact number of the victims is still unknown, but it is believed Makarenkov raped at least 108 women during the last 27 years. While speaking to police officers, the man said, "I gave myself these girls as a birthday gift."

When the girl arrived at the home where they were planning to 'hang out,' four other men were there: Devoric Javon Evans, 20; Lamont Tray Davis, 19; Day'tron Derrell Smith, 18; and Cory Darnell Hall, 18.

According to authorities, Hall stated that he heard the girl telling Canada to stop when he began to rape her in the bathroom.

A 31-year-old pastor, Rev. Isaac Newton is cooling off in prison custody after he allegedly raped a member of his church at knife point in his living room at Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region of Ghana.

He was remanded in prison by the Agona Swedru district magistrate court.

While addressing the court, a police sergeant, Emmanuel Agbafe said on May 28 at about 8p.m. the victim and others had attended an all-night prayer meeting. The pastor had told her in confidence that he had a vision about her during the prayer time and the vision it was revealed that her grandmother had given her some evil beads which she was wearing.

He then invited her to his house for counselling and deliverance session.

According to the police sergeant, the victim went to the pastor's residence the next day at about 8:40 a.m.

When she got there, he instructed her to remove the beads around her waist which she declined, saying she was a married woman.

Angered by the woman's refusal, Rev Newton was said to have brought out a knife which he used in cutting the bead. After which he forced the victim to his bed, threatening to kill her if she screamed. He then went on to abuse her sexually. After having his way with the woman, the pastor was said to have apologised for his action, begging the victim not to tell anyone about it.

The prosecutor said the case was later referred to the Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit, (DOVVSU), of the Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command, where Newton admitted to the offence.

20.06.2014, 17:47 Foreign

Six Nigerians have been arrested for allegedly forging letterheads of the Office of the President of Ghana, John Mahama and other state institutions to defraud people.

According to a report on Ghana's Daily Graphic, the arrested suspects are Paul Kelvin, 20; Wallace Darden Odon, 28; Osamidiamwen Ikecheku Emeka, 24; Prince Ejime, 19; Charles Chinedu, 32, and Adebayoo Alaba Saheed, 21.

It was gathered that all the suspects are unemployed while they live in the west African nation.

Reports stated that all the arrested Nigerians have been charged with forging documents, signatures and posing as state officials.

It was also gathered that the suspects were charged with deceit of public officers because they gave false names to the police during interrogation.

The Ghanaian website, while quoting the Accra Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Paul Kontomah, reports that the suspects were arrested in a house at Ayensu Estate, near Adenta in Accra, on 9 June, 2014.

Among the letters retrieved from the suspects was one directing a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to take his compulsory leave for Mr Mohammed Alhassan, the current IGP, to take over the position.

There were also certificates signed by the Minister of the Interior, Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, to prove the origins of some American citizens, as well as High Court disclaimer forms.

Mr Kontomah said the police, acting on intelligence that the young men were involved in criminal activities, swooped on them in the early hours of 9 June, "and we found them busy browsing the Internet in their room with laptops."

He said prior to the arrest of the suspects, residents of the area had filed complaints with the police that a group of young men in the house had been harassing them in the night.

Among items police retrieved from the Nigerians were eight laptops and a search on them led to the retrieval of a number of forged documents from state institutions.

Some of the forged documents are ones from the Office of the President, the High Court, the Ghana Police Service, the Value Added Tax division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, among other institutions.

The police chief said the suspects used the documents to facilitate illegal electronic transaction and lure people to part with money.

In addition to the eight laptops retrieved from the suspects, a quantity of dried substances believed to be Indian hemp was also allegedly found on them.

One of the letters on the letterhead of the Office of the President and purportedly signed by Dr Raymond A. Atuguba, the Executive Secretary to the President, read: "His Excellency the President has given approval for Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, the Inspector-General of Police, to commence his compulsory 90-day terminal leave from February 5-4 May 2013.

Boko Haram Forcefully Recruit Cameroonian Boys Into Sect – Report
20.06.2014, 7:46 Local

Fresh report indicates that militants of the dreaded Boko Haram group snatch young boys in Cameroon, from across the boarder with Nigeria, to force them into the sect.

Photo: Cameroonian elite troops, B.I.R

According to Daily Mail, numerous villages in the area were cleared out and schools torched by the terrorists even despite the presence of elite troops of Battalion D'Intervention Rapide (B.I.R).

Speaking with Sky News, residents said Boko Haram raided villages during the daytime to snatch boys.

One of the boys narrated how he refused to join the terrorists, causing substantial tension, however he managed to escape from them.

While Nigeria accuses Cameroon of being unable to prevent the insurgents from crossing the border and thus letting them hide in the neighbouring country, the spokesperson of Cameroon's Defence Ministry Lieutenant Colonel Badjeck claims speaking with Sky News:

"They [Boko Haram] are not in Cameroon. Why would we allow that? This is bad for Cameroon. We are suffering too at the hands of Boko Haram."

It would be recalled that more than two months have passed since the abduction of over 250 Chibok school girls. The feared sect claimed responsibility for the kidnap 3 weeks later stating that they would sell the girls in the market.

Numerous experts alleged that the students might have been splitt into groups and relocated to the neighbouring countries. Later Cameroon and Chad claimed they might block the main routes said to be used by insurgents.

Despite the international support in the find-and-rescue operation, the abduction victims still remain in captivity.
Chibok: Jonathan says terrorism is sad, Boko Haram won’t last forever
on june 20, 2014 at 6:07 pm in news

Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday described terrorism as a sad event
and assured Nigerians that the evil the Boko Haram sect represented would not last
forever.
Jonathan made the remark while receiving a report from the presidential fact-
finding committee on the abducted Chibok female students at the Presidential
Villa, Abuja.
Jonathan inaugurated the committee on May 6 to provide government with
accurate information about the abduction.
The Chairman of the committee is Brig.-Gen. Ibrahim Sabo.
The president said he would not rest until terror was crushed in the country
because “Nigeria can no longer live with the monster called Boko Haram.”
Jonathan described the abduction as painful, especially as the Chibok girls were
still in the hands of criminal elements.
He reiterated his position that he and the security agencies would not sleep until
the girls were rescued.
Jonathan said that terror attack anywhere was an attack on everyone.
He said that contrary to the belief that security agencies were not doing enough to
end terrorism, “they are doing their best but they should do more to end insurgency
in the country.’’
Jonathan commended the chairman and members of the committee for their
commitment and patriotism in the discharge of their responsibility even at personal
risk.
Presenting the report, Sabo confirmed that a total of 219 of the girls were still
missing.
He disclosed that a total of 276 girls were abducted by members of the Boko
Haram Sect at the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Chibok, Borno on
April 14.
According to him, 119 students escaped from the school’s premises before the
insurgents took away their classmates, while 57 of those abducted escaped and
have been reunited with their families.
Sabo said: “The committee here wishes to lay to rest any residual doubt as to
whether or not any student was abducted at Chibok.’’
“As most Nigerians already know, there were some persons who doubted whether
in fact any student was abducted.
“On the other hand, for those who believed that there was abduction, there were
lingering doubts as to how such a number of kidnap victims were conveyed,
considering also that information was sparse as to how the insurgents evacuated the
victims.
“A total of 276 students were thus abducted.
“As of today, 57 of the abducted students have been reunited with their families
after escaping along zig-zag transport route taken by the insurgents or by bolting to
safety when the insurgents were resting.
“Sadly, 219 students remain unaccounted for,’’ he said.
The chairman said that the committee received the full cooperation of the people
and interacted with different stakeholders considered relevant to the fact-finding
mission.
He, however, said that a particular senator from Borno, whose name he did not
mention, shunned the committee after he had initially agreed to an appointment.
“The singular exception was a senator from Borno who, after agreeing to an
appointment with the committee, turned around to avoid the meeting on the excuse
that he had another appointment and would thereafter be unavailable for one month
or so.
“Not that his non-appearance has materially or in any way affected the outcome of
the committee’s findings, but the senator’s avoidance of an interface with the
committee may well speak to a motive not too difficult to discern,’’ he said.
Sabo noted that though Nigerians and the rest of the world had been galvanised to
drum up support for the freedom of the girls, little would be achieved through
finger-pointing.
“Getting the girls out and safely too, is of more importance than the publicity
generated by the blame game that has tended to becloud the issue,” he said. (NAN)Dxdffsdddd

9 Most Effective Ways to Cope with Depression
When you’re depressed it seems like nothing can make you feel better. However
there are several mental tricks to combat depression that you may want to try,
because they do offer amazing results. Although you can treat depression using
medication, there’s also a kind of therapy, which is called cognitive behavioral
therapy. It focuses on changing your behavior and it’s one of the most effective
ways to cope with depression. Read on to learn some mental tricks to combat
depression and live a happy life.
1. Let go of the past
Let bygones be bygones. You should realize and admit that you cannot change t
past. It can only make you suffer from the things, which have no connection wit
the present. Let go of the past and don’t focus on your future. Try to focus on
your present and use your mental and physical resources to reach your goals no

teach you to be mature and more confident.

walls of depression. Life is too short to spend it miserably. Be more realistic and
try not to watch TV that is full of negative info.
3. Stop overanalyzing things
If you are fond of mulling over your problems, you won’t be able to combat
depression. Focusing on the issue can play a bad trick with you. It can maintain
and develop depression, which can affect your mental health. You should get rid

Stoke City striker Osaze Odemwingie and Almeria midfielder Ramon Azeez
may not see action in Saturday’s crucial World Cup Group F clash against
Bosnia-Herzegovina, africanfootball.com has reported.
Osaze brought some urgency and creativity to the Super Eagles’ attack against
Iran on Monday, but Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi said the former Russia-based
forward defied his instructions even though he was playing an unfamiliar role.
Keshi is said to be disappointed with Azeez’s performance against Iran and has
lined up Belgium-based Michael Uchebo to take his place.
Skipper Joseph Yobo is expected to keep his place in the first team after
Turkey-based defender Godfrey Oboabona was ruled out of Saturday’s cracker

Yobo told africanfootball.com in Brazil that reaching a century of international

Adamawa Crisis: Nyako's Planned
Impeachment Is A Threat To Peace- Shehu
Sani
Popular human rights activist and President of the Civil
Rights Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Shehu Sani, on Friday
berated the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal
Government for orchestrating the planned impeachment of
the Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako. He
described the move as a threat to the nation’s hard-earned
democracy.
He also warned that any attempt to rig the Ekiti State
Governorship poll slated for June 21, would amount to
inciting the electorate against the government of the day.
Sani also condemned said the impeachment notice served
on Nyako and his deputy, Bala Ngilari, by the state
assembly, saying that the move was a script being acted out
by the PDP to persecute the governor for defecting to the pdp
All Progressives Congress.
In an electronic message to newsmen in Kaduna on Friday,
Sani insisted that the impeachment plot was a plot by the
PDP and the Federal Government to retake the state.
According to him, the impeachment was not only a threat
to peace, but to the entire democratic process, which was
earned through struggle and sacrifice.
While recognising the constitutional rights of the state
legislators to perform their oversight responsibilities, he
noted that it was “dishonorable, unethical and immoral for
the legislators to compromise their conscience and allow
themselves to play the puppet.”
He said, “The impeachment is a threat to peace and the
democratic process. It’s unacceptable. Governor Nyako is a
victim of political vendetta.
“It’s most unfortunate that while the nation burns in the
flames of insurgency, the ruling PDP and the Federal
Government is more interested in intimidating and
harassing dissenting and defecting state governors.
“The action by the Adamawa State House of Assembly is
no different from the earlier failed attempts made in Rivers,
Nasarawa, Kano and Edo states. Removing Nyako and his
deputy amount to nothing but regime change in disguise.”
On the Ekiti State governorship election, the pro-
democracy activist warned that the election must not be
rigged.
He condemned the reported harassment and intimidation of
APC governors on their way to the state for the APC rally.
He noted that the state’s governorship election would be a
pointer to the 2015 general election, adding that it would be
a bad omen for the 2015 elections, if the Independent
National Electoral Commission failed to conduct a free, fair
elections in the state.
He warned the military and other security agencies to
refrain from being partisan, noting that the nation’s
democratic process was never a gift from the military, but
rather a product of bitter struggle and sacrifice.
He said, “The PDP needs to be reminded that it cannot win
elections with the Army and the Police alone. Nigeria’s
democratic process is not a gift given to us by the military,
it was a product of bitter struggle and sacrifice.

Update on Ibadan House of Horror: victims recount how they were kidnapped

Some victims rescued from the house of horror in the Soka area of Ibadan in Oyo, who have started gradually regaining their sanity, have recounted how they found themselves at the kidnappers den.
Speaking with a Punch reporter, one of  the victims, Nafiu Shittu, said he was a busy selling his locally made pile medicine when he was kidnapped and brought into the forest 4 months ago.
"I am a native of Ibadan, living in the Foko area of the city. I sold pile medicine to people. I was doing the business on the day I was kidnapped about four months ago. After going round the area where I had customers, I felt tired and decided to rest in the Gate area. Suddenly, a bus stopped by my side and two men came out and forced me into the back seat of the vehicle. That was all I could remember. When I regained consciousness, I saw myself in a room in the forest, chained to a wall. I was too tired to struggle and as the days passed, I became frail because I was not given anything to eat."
Nafiu who stressed that he was not a mad man and so was not taken to the horror house for treatment, said he saw dead bodies in the place but couldn't confirm if they were killed there or not. Continue...

Reps Probe petroleum minister for N10billion private jet expenses

The House of Representatives yesterday passed a resolution to probe the expenditures of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Maduekwe, on a private jet she allegedly charters for private use and maintains with public funds.

"Thus, in the last two years, the minister has committed at least N3.120bn to maintaining the private jet, which is used solely for her personal needs and those of her immediate family, which is an appalling act"he said. He said the frequent use of the Jet by the Minister and her family members has caused an estimated N10billion to be spent on it for maintenance, fuel, payment of crew members, hanger rentage and others.
